Health and social services are provided for in all schools in Quebec by CLSC's (recently renamed HSSC - Health and Social Services Centers). I am assigned to Riverdale High School for two (2) days each week - Monday and Wednesday (8:30 - 4:00).
My role is as a Health Educator. Professionals in my role are responsible for running prevention programs and individual counseling. Our goal is to prevent and reduce problems related to our youth population, helping them make better choices and improve their critical thinking in this regard. This is achieved in group sessions (such as class visits) or by one-on-one individual consultations.
One area of priority are self-esteem, as without a good sense of self it will be difficult to make good choices and feel empowered. Another is sexuality, and the need to reduce teen pregnancy rates and the rate of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI).
My office is also responsible for the control of infectious diseases within the school, as outlined by the Public Health Department protocols.
For any further information, I can be contacted at the Pierrefonds CLSC Youth Clinic at 514-626-2572 ext. 5226.
